You are expected to demonstrate you have substantial ownership interests in business and that you are personally involved at a senior level in the daily operations and management of the business. The business should be an Australian business or a branch of a business that has connections with Australia. Evidence to support a claim of business ties to Australia can be:
- Company reports defining your role and authority
- Business transactions
- Bank statements
- Tax returns
- Contracts showing your signature
Employment
You are expected to demonstrate you are currently employed, or have a formal offer of employment in Australia, or employed overseas by the Australian government or a commercial organisation. Evidence to support a claim of substantial employment ties of benefit to Australia may include:
- Letter of offer from employers
- Employment contracts
- Recent official documents such as group certificates
- Employee identification
Cultural
Evidence to support a claim of substantial cultural ties of benefit to Australia may include:
- Publications written by you
- Evidence of membership of cultural associations
- Newspaper articles about you
- Programmes listing your artistic or cultural performances
Personal
Evidence to support a claim of substantial personal ties to Australia may include:
- Documents which show you have been living outside Australia with an Australian citizen partner or, in the case of a child, an Australian citizen parent, who has previously lived in Australia.
- Birth certificates, citizenship certificates or evidence of permanent residence of any immediate family members who reside in Australia AND proof you are related to the immediate family members who reside in Australia.
- Evidence of property ownership in Australia, such as a property purchase contract or certificate of ownership and details of whether the property is currently occupied by family members or tenants not personally known to you.

The eligibility criteria of Resident Return Visa Subclass 155 and 157 is:
You must be:
- An Australian permanent resident.
- A former Australian permanent resident whose last permanent visa was not cancelled.
- A former Australian citizen who lost or renounce Australian citizenship.
Visa Tenure:
Travel validity will vary depending on your circumstances:
- If you have lived in Australia for 2 years (730 days) in the last 5 years as a permanent resident, former citizen or former permanent resident, then you meet what is known as the residence requirement and might be given a 5 year travel validity on your visa.
- If you have not lived in Australia for 2 years in the last 5 years as a permanent resident or former citizen or former permanent resident, then you might be given a maximum of 12 months travel validity on your visa if you can demonstrate substantial ties that benefit Australia.
- If you meet the requirements only because you are a member of family unit of a person who holds this visa, then you can only be given a maximum of 12 months travel validity on your visa.
- If you don't meet the requirement, but have compelling and compassionate reasons for departure, then you might only be given 3 months travel validity on your visa.
- If you hold a Resident Return Visa (RRV), you should be aware of your travel validity’s expiry date. If you need to travel, you should apply for a new RRV before your existing travel validity expires in order to avoid delays.
If you return to Australia without a permanent visa and a valid travel facility (for example, a visitor visa), this might impact your:
- Entitlements as a permanent resident
- Ability to satisfy the permanent residence requirements when applying for Australian citizenship or another Resident Return visa.
- If your travel validity has expired and you do not wish to travel, you do not need to apply for a Resident Return visa.
